appz and crackz etc....

Appz are (illegal) copies of programmes/ applications (known as Programz/ Appz/ Warez) appearing on the internet for download.

Crackz (patches/ hacks) are small programmes written by very clever people which disable the restrictions ( 30 day trials, save disabled etc) commonly found on programmes given out by software companies. These are the 'teasers' usually found on magazine cover CDs or trial progs from their own websites. Hackers and crackers use mixtures of capital and small letters in their pseudonames, site names etc and 'z' in place of an 's' indicates something not quite legal e.g hAcKerz

where?

best places to start are the crack newsgroups, subscribe to all the newsgroups which have cracks(z) e.g alt.cracks, alt.2600.crackz, alt.binaries.cracks, alt.warez.win95 etc.

watch out for therecommended crack/appz site urls and crack programmes (as attachments). I would advise you run an upto date antivirus on any attachments you download (usually zip files).

bookmark urls and links but visit soon, most good sites don't last long before their ISP realises what they are up to ! (especially appz sites).

you can try searching using yahoo, alta vista etc under 'named programme' crack, crackz but you are likely to go through many crap (pop up porno) sites before hitting a genuine good site. Advise you use a pop up crusher.

how?

download the crack file, usually a zip file (or another compression type e.g. arj, rar). Unzip it and open the instruction file .nfo in wordpad. Sometimes the unzipping the zip file will give you further compresses files, either rars or arjs. Follow the instructions carefully- often cracks work differently. Make sure the crack is suitable for your exact version (v5.01 version might not work on 5.02 version of your program) of the 'demo/ trial' programme. For arj and rar programmes use Winrar (find on yahoo or similar) orJustclick (download from here: http://www.window95.com/hot2/compress.html )

help! (I want....)

ask the newsgroups (but don't ask stupid questions- watch the group for a while before submitting a request or question)
